What is New Canaan Youth Cheerleading?
New Canaan Youth Cheerleading (NCYC) is a cheerleading program for elementary-aged children living in New Canaan. Participants will learn the basics of cheerleading, including arm motions, jumps, chants, and simple stunts. No experience is required.
What is the program schedule?
The program runs for about 8 to 10 weeks in the fall, following the New Canaan Flag Football season. Practices are held once a week for 45 to 60 minutes. Cheerleaders will perform at Saturday morning flag football games.
Who can participate?
The program is open to children in grades 1 through 4 who live in New Canaan.
Is parent participation required?
Practices are drop off, but we do need parent volunteers on game days. Each parent will be asked to chaperone at least one game during the season. No cheer experience is needed. Volunteers will help keep the team organized and motivated.
Is tumbling or stunting involved?
This is an introductory sideline cheer program. Tumbling and advanced stunts are not part of the instruction. Stunts will be limited to thigh stands and always supervised by the head coaches. Participants will not be allowed to stunt unless a coach is present with the group.
What do cheerleaders need to wear?
For practices, wear comfortable clothes, sneakers, and keep hair pulled back. For games, we are working to provide official uniforms. If your child is interested in cheer shoes, here is an example (these are optional and not required for the program).
Have cheer experience and want to help this program grow?
Let us know how you can help! We’re always looking for volunteers to help expand New Canaan Youth Cheerleading
